The Popularity of WordPress

Did you know that WordPress is now the most popular blogging platform in the world?  Actually, WordPress has been the go-to content management system (CMS) for online marketing and web development professionals for the past several years.

WordPress is by far the Most Popular Blogging System in use on the Web with More than 74 million Websites.  It is used on 21% of all CMS websites and has a market share of nearly 60%.

WordPress History

WordPress was created in May 2003 by its cofounders, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, as a division within b2/cafelog.  It is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS).  The platform is based on a template system and its architecture is created through the use of plug-ins.

WordPress is also developed by its community, including WP testers, which is a group of volunteers who test each release. WP testers has first access to nightly builds, beta versions and release candidates. Errors are documented in a special mailing list, or the project’s Trac tool.

Even though WordPress is predominantly developed by its surrounding community, WordPress is closely associated with Automattic, the company founded by Matt Mullenweg.  In September 2010, Automattic turned over the WordPress trademark to the newly created WordPress Foundation, which is an umbrella organization supporting WordPress.org.  This includes the software and archives for plugins and themes (bbPress and BuddyPress).

WordPress Benefits

Simple, Ease of Use and Scalable
WordPress has an intuitive interface, which makes it simple and easy to use. For its most basic websites, WordPress doesn’t require HTML editing software such as Coffee Cup and Adobe’s Dreamweaver and Contribute. It allows you to create new pages, blog posts, upload images and graphics, format content text, upload files such as documents, images, videos, etc. without having any HTML or FTP software.  Since the platform is scalable, your website/blog can have just a few pages or thousands of pages/posts.  It’s totally up to you.The technology also allows programmers to spend less time formatting and since it’s a browser based system, back-end managers can gain access from any internet connected device and manage their site. The administrator of the website is also capable of creating multiple users and provide access at various levels and capabilities.

Search Engines Love WordPress Websites
Did you know that WordPress is one of the easiest platforms for search engines to read and index?  Well, it’s true.  All WordPress web pages are created using meta data such as meta titles, descriptions meta key words and even tags.  Since all WordPress pages allows for this meta data entry, the opportunity exists to properly optimize any page on a WordPress website. Also, since WordPress’ code is so simple and clean, search engines have no trouble reading and indexing its websites, which places WordPress websites at a great advantage when competing with other websites built on other platforms.
