Ad Revenues at Twitter Expected to Skyrocket over the next 24 months
Marketers will spend $150 million in 2011 and $250 million in 2012
Over the past 12 months Twitter has generated quite a buzz in the media and has become a household name. However, only 8% of Americans use the highly talked about social platform. So is it just hype? Not according to eMarketer who expects Twitter to more than triple its advertising revenues from $45 million in 2010 to a whopping $150 million in 2011. By 2012 eMarketer believes Twitter will be generating as much as $250 million in advertising.
Compared to the behemoth Facebook, who will generate more than $4 billion in ad revenues in 2011, Twitter seems somewhat of an after though. However sometime between 2011 and 2012, Twitter will in surpass MySpace as the #2 Social Network selling ad revenues.
“If Twitter can grow its user base and convince marketers of its value as a go-to secondary player to Facebook, it will succeed in gaining revenue,” said Debra Aho Williamson, eMarketer principal analyst. “In 2011 it must work overtime to give its early advertisers a positive experience.”
Twitter’s existing Promoted Products suite and the soon to be launched self-serve platform (similar to Facebook’s widely successful advertising targeting system), should allow them to realize their full monetization efforts in 2011.
